Here are ways recommended by emergency dentists to make typical dental crises less of an ordeal.

• Sudden toothache. To relieve toothache, you need to control swelling. Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory painkiller like ibuprofen or aspirin. Rinse your mouth with warm water and hold an icepack to your face.
• Knocked-out tooth. Keep the tooth, handling it by the crown. Your dentist may be able to reinsert it, so put the tooth in a cup of water with a pinch of salt. Or place the tooth back in its socket yourself if you can do so without forcing it.
• Facial swelling. Severe facial swelling indicates a serious infection of a tooth, gums or bone. This can spread to other areas. Avoid lying down, and keep your body hydrated to lessen the risk of further complications.
• Tongue Injury. When injured, your tongue can swell and become painful. It may also bleed profusely. To minimize bleeding, pack gauze onto the area and put pressure on it.
